Shedding a little light on what it takes to turn a bowl............
This red
maple log was 22 inches across at the small end and 14 feet long.
The first
step is to cross cut the log into sections about 16 inches long.
Next, rip
the sections down the middle cutting out the very center.
The next
cuts determine the depth of the bowl blank.
Then the
slabs are squared off to about 16" x 16".
...and
loaded into the truck for the ride back to my shop.
The next
step is on to the band saw to round off the blanks.
The
scraps are cut into turning squares for pepper mills, wine bottle stoppers etc.
Now the
real fun starts. The blanks are loaded onto the lathe and the outside
shape is rough turned.
The
inside is then cored out in one piece from which another bowl will be turned
The
inside of the bowl is then rough turned to shape.
These are
rough turned bowls air drying in the shop. It takes up to a year for a
bowl to dry before finish turning.
